The Griot Knew: African Memory Traditions and What Neuroscience Is Finally Naming

Memory has never been singular. Long before neuroscientists at Columbia University discovered that the brain stores at least three parallel copies of every experience, the griot had already understood this. In West African tradition, the griot does not simply remember — they hold. They carry lineages, treaties, migrations, and grief in a form that cannot be collapsed into one version, one narrative, one file. Memory, in the African cosmological frame, is plural, layered, communal, and alive. Western science is just catching up.

The Griot as Living Archive

In Mande, Wolof, Mandinka, and dozens of other West African traditions, the griot — jeli, gewel, djeli — is the keeper of communal memory. But this is not passive storage. The griot activates memory in context: for a funeral, for a naming ceremony, for a coronation, for a dispute over land. Different occasions call up different registers of the same history. The community’s memory is plural by design — layered, contextually retrievable, held not in one mind but in relationship between the griot and the people who carry the lineage.

This is not a metaphor. This is epistemology. The idea that memory must be singular — one truth, one fixed account — is a Western colonial inheritance. African knowledge systems understood what contemporary neuroscience is beginning to prove: that memory is dynamic, that multiple versions of the same event coexist, and that which version surfaces depends on context, relationship, and need.

What the Brain Is Actually Doing

A 2024 study found that memory copies come and go and change with time — that the hippocampus stores at least three distinct parallel copies of every experience through different neuronal populations. Early-born neurons hold the long-term anchor of a memory. Late-born neurons capture the immediate intensity of an event. Middle-stage neurons carry what we need for the medium term — the daily operational memory of a life being lived. These copies do not contradict each other. They serve different functions and activate under different conditions.

This is precisely how oral tradition works. The grief-memory of a loss and the celebration-memory of the same ancestor are not the same version — they are different copies, activated by ceremony. The griot tradition is a human externalization of what the hippocampus does internally. Neither is more “real.” Both are necessary.

Indigenous Memory and the Land

Among Aboriginal Australian peoples, the Songlines encode memory across geography — ancestral paths where story, law, and land merge into a system of navigation and identity. Memory is not in the head alone; it lives in the land. The stories activated when you walk a particular path are not the same as the stories told in ceremony, which are not the same as the stories passed to children at particular ages. Multiple copies. Multiple contexts. One living system.

This understanding illuminates one of the cruelest dimensions of colonial displacement: when Indigenous and African communities are removed from their ancestral land, they lose not just shelter or livelihood — they lose the external architecture of their memory system. The land held copies the body cannot hold alone. Colonial dispossession is, among other things, an act of memory destruction.

The Ancestral Body Remembers

The science of epigenetics and ancestral memory has shown that even inherited experience shapes how we store and retrieve information — that the body encodes what ancestors survived. The multiple memory copies the brain creates are not only from our own lived experience. They are also shaped by what was passed to us. African cosmological traditions have named this for centuries: that we are not born empty, that the ancestors speak through us, that memory runs deeper than individual biography.

What neuroscience calls “long-term memory consolidation” and “synaptic plasticity,” African tradition calls sankofa — going back to fetch what was left behind. The brain does this structurally, automatically, at the cellular level. The tradition named the same truth in ceremony and symbol long before the laboratory named it in neuronscience.

When Memory Loss Is a Community Crisis

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia fall disproportionately on Black Americans — at nearly twice the rate of white Americans — and the structural causes are the same ones UV has named elsewhere: chronic stress, inadequate healthcare access, environmental exposures, the cumulative weight of what racism does to the body over decades. When an elder is lost to dementia in a community where oral tradition is still alive, the loss is not just personal. A copy of the community’s memory — a version that only they held — is gone.

This is why community care for elders is not sentimentality. It is knowledge preservation. The griot tradition understood that memory keepers require collective protection. The community’s obligation to its elders is partly an obligation to its own archive. Mirror neurons and communal healing research shows us the biological mechanisms by which community presence literally supports cognitive function. We are wired for each other. The elder flourishes when held, and when the elder flourishes, what they carry can be passed.

Memory Is Never Just Personal

The research suggests that the parallel memory copies the brain holds are not redundant — they serve different functions across different timescales. The community holds parallel copies too: the elder’s version, the young person’s version, the ceremony’s version, the song’s version. None is more authoritative than the others. Together, they make the community’s memory resilient. Remove any copy — through death, displacement, or silence — and something is irretrievably lost.

The griot’s work was always structural, not individual. It was an architecture of collective survival. The neuroscience of multiple memory copies is, at its deepest level, a confirmation of what African tradition already knew: that memory requires community, and community requires memory. —MM
