3 Days Until June 1st: A Letter to the 70 Families Who Are About to Have Light

To the 70 families in Uganda who are three days away from light,

We want you to know something before Sunday arrives.

We want you to know that what is happening on June 1st did not begin with a grant application or a board meeting or a budget line. It began with a belief — one that Ubuntu Village has carried since its founding — that communities across the African diaspora are not problems to be solved. They are wisdom traditions to be resourced.

You have been living with the resourcefulness that comes from making do without. Stretching kerosene. Monitoring flame. Calibrating every evening around the cost of light. You have been doing this not because you lacked intelligence or vision or capacity — but because the infrastructure of energy sovereignty was never built for you first. It was always built around you, passed over you, or sold to you at a price designed to keep you just within reach of it.

We have been thinking about you. About the children who will study past dark without counting the minutes. About the elders who will move through their homes safely after sunset. About the women who will cook and care and create without the low-level vigilance that open flame demands. About the quiet that will come when the lamp does not have to be tended.

We have been thinking about what you will do with your first unhurried night.

What June 1st Actually Is

Ubuntu Village does not describe this as charity. We never have.

What is happening on June 1st is restoration — the return of something that was always yours. The sun has been arriving every morning over Uganda without fail. What was missing was not the energy. What was missing was the infrastructure to receive it.

This initiative does not end on June 1st. It begins there. Seven to ten homes will be electrified every month as the initiative grows — methodically, sustainably, community-rootedly — until the circle is complete.

Women-led households are prioritized, because energy independence begins with her. Because when a woman controls her light, she controls her time. And when she controls her time, everything downstream of that shifts.

The United Nations Development Programme has documented what reliable energy access does to a community: it extends education hours, stabilizes healthcare delivery, supports local economic activity, and reduces the environmental cost of kerosene and open flame.

But what the data cannot fully capture is the spiritual dimension of what changes when a family no longer has to manage their evening around scarcity.

This is not development. This is alignment. The sun is the oldest ancestor. And on June 1st, it finally gets to stay.

To the 70 families — this letter is for you. But it is also for everyone in this community who has been watching, contributing, praying, and sharing.

Every donation that reached Ubuntu Village carried a family one step closer to June 1st. Every share of our solar initiative page extended the circle of people who understood what was at stake. Every person who chose to be a partner rather than a bystander made the infrastructure of this moment possible.

We did not do this for you. We did this with you. That is the Ubuntu principle that holds everything together — Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, I am because we are. The 70 families receiving light on June 1st are not recipients of charity. They are the next chapter in a communal story that everyone in this network has been writing together.
