As a Nigerian youth, I am proud to share the powerful voices that echoed through the streets during the #EndBadGovernance protests that shook our nation from August 1 to 11, 2024. We, the youth of Nigeria, stood united in demanding an end to bad governance, fighting for a brighter future, free from corruption, economic stagnation, insecurity, and social injustice. Together, we raised our voices to advocate for the change we deserve in our beloved country. This kind of collective action reflects what scholars of colonialism and global health policy have long argued: structural harm demands structural resistance.
End Corruption: A Plea for Transparent Governance
Every Nigerian youth’s heart beats with a desire for change, especially when it comes to the rampant corruption that has seeped into every facet of our governance. The protest is a response to the current state of affairs in the country, including economic downturn, high inflation, and government spending.
Corruption is a massive obstacle that thwarts our nation’s progress, eating away at resources that could dramatically transform our healthcare, education, and infrastructure. It’s an old song we’ve grown tired of, a tune that plays on loop, reminding us of lost opportunities and deferred dreams. The #EndCorruption hashtag isn’t just a trend; it’s our collective outcry for a shift towards transparency and integrity in our country.
The sting of corruption isn’t just felt in the embezzled funds or the shady deals that are whispered about; it’s seen in the dilapidated buildings that were once promised to be schools, in hospitals that run without adequate supplies, and in the pothole-ridden roads that were once earmarked for repair. This cycle of corruption leaves us, the youth, feeling disillusioned and frustrated. We are forced to question the legacy we’re inheriting and the future we’re stepping into. The agitation grows as we see the potential of our beloved Nigeria stifled under the weight of corrupt practices.
The solution, however, lies within our grasp. It begins with holding our leaders accountable, demanding transparency in government spending, and insisting on implementing robust anti-corruption measures. It’s time for policies that prevent corruption and ensure that those caught in such acts face the consequences severe enough to deter future occurrences. Transparency in governance is not just a plea; it’s a demand, a rallying cry that unites us all under the banner of #EndCorruption.
The most prominent age bracket in Nigeria is constituted by those up to four years old. About half of the Nigerian population would be aged under 18.5 years in 2030. We are at a pivotal moment where the actions we take today can usher in a new era for Nigeria. In this era, governance is characterized by integrity, transparency, and accountability. Let’s transform our agitation into action, ensuring that the voices demanding change are too loud to be ignored. Together, we can pave the way for a Nigeria that we can all be proud of, a nation where corruption is the exception, not the norm.
Economic Stagnation: Breaking Free from Poverty
In the heart of every Nigerian youth lies a dream, a vision of prosperity currently clouded by the looming shadow of economic stagnation. The issue of job scarcity, coupled with relentless inflation, has tightened its grip around our aspirations, leaving us in despair. The stark reality is that too many of us are entrapped in the vicious cycle of poverty, with our dreams fading into the distance. Our call is for an inclusive economy where every Nigerian can rise above poverty and achieve their full potential. This is not just a dream; it’s a necessity for the prosperity of our nation. By championing these reforms, we ignite the possibility of a brighter future for all.
Insecurity: The Quest for Safety and Peace
In Nigeria, the shadow of insecurity looms large, casting a pall over our daily existence. Our streets, once filled with the vibrant chatter of community life, now echo with the whispers of caution and fear. The specter of violence and crime has become a constant companion for many of us, turning what should be safe havens into arenas of uncertainty. It’s a distressing reality that gnaws at the very fabric of our society, leaving us yearning for a sense of security that seems ever elusive. #SafetyFirst
