What African Traditions Know About Spiritual Wisdom
Long before the Kabbalistic tradition articulated Songael’s gifts, African civilizations had developed the most sophisticated theologies of sacred wisdom on earth — systems that understood divine knowledge not as private illumination but as communal inheritance, passed through lineage, ritual, and relationship with the divine.
In Kemetic tradition, Djehuti (known in Greek as Thoth) is the neter of wisdom, sacred writing, and divine knowledge — one of the oldest and most complete archetypes of the celestial guide of spiritual evolution in all of human history. Ibis-headed, carrying the was-scepter, he is the divine scribe who records the truth of all things, the keeper of the sacred order of Ma’at, the one who guides souls through the Duat and witnesses their alignment with truth. He did not create wisdom — he held it. He did not impose knowledge — he illuminated it. In the Kemetic understanding, to grow in wisdom is to grow into alignment with what already is, what was always true. This is the same gift Songael carries.
In the Yoruba tradition, the orisha who governs sacred knowledge and the capacity to understand one’s destiny is Orunmila — the keeper of Ifá. He was present at the creation of every human soul and holds the sacred record of each person’s purpose. Where Djehuti holds the cosmic record, Orunmila holds the personal one — knowing who you were called to be before you were born, and guiding you back to that truth when the world obscures it. Ifá divination is the communal practice of accessing this wisdom: it does not happen alone. The whole community participates in the act of asking, interpreting, and receiving. Knowledge is held together.
The Afro-Brazilian tradition of Candomblé honors Orunmila (as Orunlá) alongside other sacred streams — a layering of wisdom that is not syncretism born of confusion but ancestral intelligence recognizing the same current of divine knowing across different vessels. Our ancestors were the first scientists of the spirit. The Kabbalistic tradition refers to Songael; the Yoruba tradition calls this Orunmila; the Kemetic tradition calls it Djehuti. All three traditions agree: wisdom is available to those who prepare themselves to receive it, and spiritual evolution is the birthright of every human soul.

I work with Songael in a few different ways. I meditate on his energy and try to connect with him that way, creating a quiet space where I can truly listen. I ask for guidance through prayer or by writing down my questions and then opening a sacred text to see what message arrives. This practice of sacred inquiry — asking, then becoming still enough to receive — is at the heart of what Songael teaches.
