The fight between democracy and dictatorship on the African continent has been going on for decades, with no clear winner yet in sight. Many political scholars claim that it is impossible to find examples of both democracy and dictatorship in the same country at the same time in African political systems, but this view is wrong because many African countries have managed to accomplish this feat. This contradiction between democracy and dictatorship in Africa will continue until one form of government triumphs over the other, and it’s hard to say which side will come out on top when all’s said and done.

Why Dictatorships Still Exist In Africa
To begin with, one must understand that it is impossible to rule a continent as large as Africa by oneself. Many of these nations are so large that any single individual can scarcely rule them; rather, they require a system of hierarchical rule. Furthermore, It is apparent that many Africans would not respond well to democracy. Since their former European colonizers were forced out decades ago, most African nations have had very little experience with it (although South Africa is arguably an exception). The rapid transition from dictatorship to democracy in some countries has led to violent coups and insurgencies (e.g., in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire). For democracy to succeed, it must be allowed to develop gradually, much as Europe’s monarchies evolved into parliamentary governments over centuries.
How Many African Countries Are Actually Democratic?
As of late 2018, Freedom House deemed 39 African countries free, showcasing a remarkable yet complex landscape of governance across the continent. While many African countries do practice some degree of democracy, it would be a considerable oversimplification to assume that all African nations adhere to democratic rule.
On closer inspection, African democracies show significant diversity. Their structure, function, and effectiveness vary widely.
These states possess divergent political cultures and institutions and reflect varying levels of development, socioeconomic conditions, and historical trajectories that influence their democracies. The unique interactions between historical legacies, colonial pasts, and contemporary political challenges shape these nations’ pathways toward governance, leading to a complex web of political expressions and citizen engagement across the continent.
What Is Holding Back A Democratic Revolution In Africa?
The conflict between democracy and dictatorship is an enduring struggle. Democracy is often considered superior to dictatorship. However, democratic leaders can become corrupt. Some countries fight for democracy, while others appear indifferent. This disparity relates to the EIU’s democracy index. The index evaluates countries based on electoral processes and pluralism. It also considers civil liberties and political culture. Furthermore, it assesses government function, political participation, and political economy.
Should Western Nations End Support for African Dictators?
There are many reasons for Western nations to end their support for African dictators. One obvious reason is that dictators cause more harm than benefit to their countries, often leading to widespread human rights violations and instability. These leaders show no concern for their citizens, prioritizing their interests over the welfare of the people they are supposed to serve. They primarily focus on their own financial gain, amassing wealth while the majority of the population struggles to meet basic needs. Supporting dictators can help Western nations maintain wealth, as it is often politically and economically expedient to support regimes that are compliant with their interests.
Most African countries rely heavily on exports for earnings, yet this support comes at a high cost to both citizens and the international community. Export earnings often fund a dictator’s lavish lifestyle, enabling them to live opulently while their citizens face poverty and neglect. They do not invest in infrastructure or social services, leaving vital sectors like education and healthcare underdeveloped. Instead, these resources should improve the quality of life for citizens, ensuring access to essential services and opportunities for all, fostering a more stable and prosperous future for these nations.
