Ancestral Wisdom • Plant Medicine • Sacred Protection
The earth has always known how to heal. Long before laboratories and clinical trials, our ancestors walked in relationship with the land — learning which roots drew out fever, which leaves sealed a wound, which waters restored what illness had taken. Angel Melahel is the keeper of that knowledge.
As the 23rd angel of the Shem HaMephorash, Melahel occupies a unique and deeply grounding place in the angelic tradition. Where other angels govern ambition, transformation, or celestial fire, Melahel governs the quiet intelligence of the earth — the medicine in the soil, the protection woven through safe passage, the healing that comes not from fighting illness but from restoring the conditions in which life naturally flourishes.
His Hebrew name carries the meaning “God Who Delivers Us from Evil” — not through power over nature, but through deep alignment with it. Melahel is the divine physician whose clinic is the forest, whose instruments are herbs and roots and water and breath, and whose prescription has always been: return to balance. Return to the earth. Return to yourself.
For communities rooted in Afro-diasporic healing traditions — where plant medicine, ancestral knowledge, and the body’s innate wisdom have always been primary — Melahel’s energy carries a particular resonance. This is not superstition. This is science that predates Western medicine by thousands of years. And it is still alive, still potent, still waiting to be called upon.

Melahel stands apart from the warrior archangels and the celestial messengers. He is a healer — an earth-keeper, a guardian of passage, a custodian of the knowledge that the land itself carries medicine for every ailment the human body can know. In Kabbalistic tradition, each angel of the Shem HaMephorash governs a specific domain with surgical precision. Melahel’s domain is the relationship between the human body and the living earth.
In the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, healing angels are understood as intermediaries between divine intention and human embodiment — beings who do not impose healing but restore the conditions in which healing becomes possible. Melahel carries this energy precisely. He does not override the body’s wisdom. He amplifies it.

Melahel and the Ancestral Tradition of Plant Medicine
Melahel’s deepest domain is plant medicine — the knowledge of which roots heal, which leaves draw out infection, which barks strengthen the blood. This is not a minor celestial function. For thousands of years before pharmaceutical medicine, plant knowledge was the entire system of healing available to humanity. Our ancestors did not guess at these medicines. They were given them — through observation, through relationship with the land, through the accumulated wisdom of generations who paid close attention.
The Yoruba tradition honors Osain — the orisha of the forest and plant medicine — as the keeper of all herbal knowledge. Osain and Melahel carry resonant energy: both are understood as guardians of the healing intelligence that lives in the natural world, waiting to be called upon by those who approach with respect. When we work with Melahel, we are not working with something foreign to African spiritual tradition. We are working with something deeply familiar, known by another name.
Sacred plants associated with Melahel’s energy across traditions include:
| Plant | Tradition | Healing Use |
| Moringa | Pan-African | Nutritional restoration, inflammation, immune support |
| Cedar | Kemetic, Ethiopian | Purification, protection, sacred smoke |
| Frankincense | Ethiopian Orthodox, Yoruba | Spiritual clearing, respiratory healing, ancestral connection |
| Sage | Afrodiasporic | Energy clearing, antimicrobial, grief processing |
| Lavender | Cross-traditional | Nervous system calming, sleep, anxiety relief |

Safe Travel and Protection from Harm
The second great domain of Melahel is protection during movement — safe passage through physical terrain, through dangerous environments, through the vulnerability that comes with being in transit. In Kabbalistic tradition, Melahel is specifically understood to protect against weapons and physical harm while traveling. This is not metaphorical. For communities whose ancestors moved through extraordinarily dangerous terrain — through the Middle Passage, through colonial borders, through migration across continents — the concept of a guardian of safe passage carries enormous weight.
Call on Melahel’s protection when:
- Beginning a journey — any distance, any mode of transport
- Entering environments that feel unsafe or uncertain
- Moving through grief, transition, or major life change
- When a family member is traveling and you wish to hold them in protection
- When navigating systems or institutions that have historically caused harm
- When you need to speak truth in a situation that carries risk
The Ubuntu tradition understands protection not as individual armor but as communal covering. When we call on Melahel, we call on behalf of all those traveling with us — seen and unseen, living and ancestral. The protection extends as far as the community reaches.

Melahel and the Healing of Chronic Illness
Melahel holds particular power for those dealing with illness that persists — conditions that conventional medicine has not fully resolved, chronic pain, ailments that seem to resist treatment, and the deep exhaustion that comes from long-term illness. This is not a rejection of medical care. It is a recognition that healing is multi-dimensional, and that the spiritual, ancestral, and energetic dimensions of illness deserve attention alongside the physiological.
Modern epigenetics is beginning to confirm what ancestral healing traditions have always known: that illness often has roots in stress encoded at the cellular level, in ancestral trauma carried in the body across generations, in the disruption of the nervous system’s capacity for safety and rest. Melahel’s healing energy works at this deeper level — not bypassing the body’s systems but restoring the conditions of safety and alignment in which those systems can do their own healing work.
Melahel is also understood to help identify the right diet, herbs, and lifestyle practices for the individual body — not a generic protocol, but the specific combination that will support your healing. Working with Melahel in prayer and ritual can open clarity about what your body needs that may have been obscured by noise, stress, or disconnection from ancestral wisdom.
“Melahel does not impose healing. He restores the conditions in which healing becomes possible. The earth already carries the medicine. He simply reminds us where to look.”

A Practice: Invoking Angel Melahel
Melahel responds to sincerity, stillness, and the willingness to receive what the earth has always been offering. You do not need elaborate ritual tools. You need intention and presence.
- Find a quiet space. If possible, have a plant, herb, or piece of earth nearby — even a cup of herbal tea honors Melahel’s domain.
- Light a green or gold candle if available. Green for healing and growth. Gold for divine illumination and angelic presence.
- Hold your hands open in your lap, palms facing upward — a posture of receiving.
- Breathe slowly and speak or think: “Angel Melahel, guardian of the earth’s medicine and keeper of safe passage, I call on you. I open myself to the healing that is already present, the protection that surrounds me, and the wisdom of the plants that carry your light. Guide me to what my body needs. Guard my going out and my coming in.”
- Sit in stillness for several minutes. Let what arises, arise — sensations, images, knowings, emotions.
- Close by touching the earth or a plant and offering gratitude: “Thank you for the healing already given and the healing still coming.”
You can call on Melahel daily — before meals as a blessing over food and medicine, before travel as a prayer of safe passage, and during illness as an invitation for deeper healing to unfold.
Living with Melahel: Daily Practices
You do not need to wait for illness or crisis to work with Melahel. His energy is available as a daily companion — woven into ordinary moments of care, nourishment, and movement.
| Practice | How to Bring Melahel In |
| Morning tea or herbs | Hold your cup and offer a breath of gratitude before drinking. Acknowledge the plant. Acknowledge the earth it came from. |
| Before travel | Pause at the threshold of your door. Breathe. Speak or think: “Melahel, guard my going out and my coming in.” |
| Caring for a plant | Tending any growing thing is an act of partnership with Melahel’s domain. Water with intention. Notice what the plant needs. |
| Preparing food | Cooking is an act of healing. Acknowledge the ingredients as medicine. Ask that the meal nourish every layer of the body. |
| During illness | Place a hand on the area of the body that is suffering. Breathe slowly. Invite Melahel’s presence: “Restore what needs restoring.” |
| Time in nature | Any time spent outside — walking, sitting, gardening — is direct communion with Melahel’s domain. No ritual required. Just presence. |
The Earth Has Always Known How to Heal You
Angel Melahel is not a distant celestial being who occasionally intervenes in human affairs. He is a constant, quiet presence — as close as the soil under your feet, as available as the herbs in your kitchen, as present as the breath moving through your body right now. His energy has been recognized across African, Kabbalistic, and Abrahamic traditions because it corresponds to something fundamental in the human experience: the knowledge that we were made to heal, that the earth provides what healing requires, and that we are never without access to both.
Our ancestors knew Melahel’s energy before they knew his name. Every healer who gathered roots by moonlight, every grandmother who knew which tea to brew for which ailment, every community that protected its travelers through prayer and ritual — they were working with this angel. They always have been.
Reclaim this lineage. Call on the guardian of the earth’s medicine. Trust what the plants have always been offering. And remember: you were never meant to heal alone.
