Ubuntu Village | June 2026 Newsletter
One Light at a Time.
Dear Friends, Partners, and Everyone Who Still Believes in the Spirit of Ubuntu,
There is something beautiful about watching a light come on for the very first time. Not because of the bulb itself, but because of everything that light represents.
For some families, it means children can finally finish their homework after the sun goes down.
For others, it means a grandmother no longer has to cook over the dim glow of a smoky kerosene lamp.
It means parents can move around their homes safely at night.
Caregivers can tend to loved ones without fear. Entire families can end the day with a little more comfort and a lot more hope. That is what this month has been about.
At Ubuntu Village, June wasn’t measured by meetings or milestones on a calendar. It was measured by smiles, conversations, and homes that no longer disappear into darkness every evening.
Every family we met reminded us why this work matters.
Solar Initiative
A Partnership That Is Already Changing Lives
One of the biggest moments this month was the official launch of our solar initiative in partnership with BrightLife. Partnerships often sound like business announcements, but this one feels much more personal. It brings together people who share a simple belief: no family should be left behind simply because electricity has never reached their village.
Together, we have begun delivering clean, reliable solar energy to homes where darkness has been accepted as a normal part of life for generations. Now that story is beginning to change.
Update: One additional family was added at the end of June, bringing our first group total to eight families with new solar home systems.
For the families receiving these systems, solar power is not a luxury.
It is freedom. Freedom from expensive kerosene. Freedom from dangerous open flames. Freedom to learn, work, cook, and care for one another long after sunset.
Community Stories
Behind Every Solar Panel Is a Family
Sometimes people ask us how many homes we have reached. It’s an important question. But we often think about it differently.
Behind every installation is a family with dreams, worries, and hopes that look remarkably similar to our own.
We met parents determined to give their children every opportunity to succeed. We met caregivers who quietly devote their lives to looking after others. We met children whose excitement could barely be contained as they watched lights switch on inside their homes. Those moments stay with you.
One story in particular has stayed with us this month.
James is 49 years old. He lives with epilepsy and a history of stroke — two conditions that require consistent medication, reliable caregiving, and the ability to respond quickly when something goes wrong. Before solar, nighttime caregiving in his home was difficult. A phone with no charge meant no way to reach help. Darkness made an already complex medical situation harder to navigate.
Now James’s home has light.
His wife can see him clearly if a seizure occurs at night.
His medication schedule is supported by a stable routine that reliable electricity makes possible.
Solar panels did not cure James’s condition. But they removed barriers that made managing it harder. That is what community-centered infrastructure does — it does not swoop in with a solution. It removes the obstacles standing between a family and the resilience they already carry.
James’s story is shared with the knowledge and blessing of his family. Names and identifying details have been changed to protect privacy.
“Our work isn’t really about installing solar panels. It’s about creating opportunities. Restoring dignity. Making everyday life just a little easier for families who have carried heavy burdens for far too long.”

Looking Forward
What’s Ahead in July
While we’re grateful for everything accomplished this month, we’re already looking toward July with excitement — and you can read how those plans unfolded in our July newsletter, The Light Keeps Moving, and how our circle kept widening in our September newsletter, The Village Widens.
- ◆Seven more families are scheduled to receive solar home systems
- ◆Seven more children will have the chance to read after sunset
- ◆Seven more caregivers will move through the night with greater confidence and safety
Real change has never been about rushing. It has always been about showing up consistently, listening carefully, and taking one meaningful step after another.
Ripple Effects
More Than Electricity
One thing we’ve learned over the years is that poverty is rarely caused by a single challenge. Limited access to energy affects education. It affects health. It affects safety. It affects family income. When a home gains reliable electricity, the benefits ripple far beyond the walls of that house.
What Changes When the Lights Come On
- Children study longer
- Small businesses stay open later
- Families save money they would have spent on fuel
- The air inside homes becomes cleaner
- People sleep easier knowing they can see what surrounds them after dark
A single light can create opportunities that last for years.
Our Foundation
The Spirit of Ubuntu
Everything we do is rooted in one simple idea.
“I am because we are.”
Ubuntu
It reminds us that lasting change doesn’t happen when one person succeeds alone. It happens when communities lift one another up. That spirit is alive in every volunteer who gives their time, every donor who chooses to invest in hope instead of headlines, and most importantly, in every family who reminds us that resilience often grows strongest in the most challenging circumstances.
Your Impact
Thank You for Walking This Journey With Us
None of this would be possible without you. Whether you’ve donated, volunteered, shared one of our stories, or simply followed our journey from afar — you are part of every light that has been switched on this year.
You are helping a child study for tomorrow’s exam.
You are helping a caregiver feel safer through the night.
You are helping a family replace uncertainty with possibility.
Those are gifts that cannot be measured in watts or dollars. They are measured in confidence. In opportunity. In hope. As we prepare for another month of installations, we carry with us the stories of the families we’ve met and the knowledge that many more are still waiting. We cannot reach them alone.
But together, we can.
Thank you for believing that every family deserves dignity, opportunity, and the simple comfort of being able to turn on a light when the sun goes down.
From everyone at Ubuntu Village, thank you for standing beside us.
With gratitude,
The Ubuntu Village Team
